This is my blog to inspire and motivate myself along my fitness & weight loss journey, the healthy way, without eating disorders, without starving or binging or hating my body. I hope to instill that my body (and every body) is a temple which should be treated respectfully, not punished with junk food and self-loathing. Hopefully it can do the same for anyone who comes across it.

Deprivation Doesn’t Work

{Taken from “The Biggest Loser” Newsletter}

“Why under-eating is not a successful weight loss strategy.”

“Under-eating to speed up weight loss has never worked in the longterm, says Greg Hottinger, RD, Biggest Loser Club nutritionist and weight loss coach. “Deprivation doesn’t lead to lasting change. Eventually you decide the pain isn’t worth it. Or your body takes over to prevent you from ‘starving’ yourself any longer.”

The answer, he says, is to find the right mix of calories to feel satisfied and strong—and to be patient. It’s not easy. But if you can change your thinking so that you are willing to work, but not willing to suffer, then you can break free of the classic but unsustainable diet mentality. Instead, focus on what you can control, and what is proven to work—keeping your metabolism revved:

Eat Enough Food. If you eat too little, you can slow down your metabolism. It’s important to find the calorie zone to support your resting metabolism given your age, height, weight, and exercise program. A BLC nutritionist can help you.

Distribute Your Food. If you follow the Biggest Loser Club diet, you will eat 5-6 small meals/snacks. Doing this helps keep your blood sugar and appetite levels balanced as well as keeps your metabolism humming along.

Strength Train Regularly. Muscle mass is what drives up your metabolism. As you lose weight, you can preserve your muscle mass by doing strength training exercises at least 3 times per week. “

When it comes to eating right and exercising, there is no “I’ll start tomorrow.” Tomorrow is disease.

The Diet Coke Downfall

Although it may be “calorie-free” it may still make you fat.. not to mention all the health risks.

“Aspartame in Diet Coke turns into formaldehyde in the body acting as a preservative that keeps fat cells where you don’t want them.”

Drink at your own risk.

Yesterday, a friend & I went to our favorite restaurant to get Acai Bowls.
Smoothies made with blueberries, acai, usually yogurt or soy milk, etc, & topped with strawberries, blueberries, banana & granola.
If you’ve never tried one you don’t know what you’re missing.

The term ‘bowl’ used loosely, it’s really in a cup. Liars.

For lunch today, scrambled up 1/2 cup of egg whites with some onion & steamed spinach on an everything bagel thin.
I also had a little snack of some fresh watermelon I just cut up.

I like my snacks in a tea cup with a side of “Whole Living” :)

Breakfast this morning - Gluten Free Raw Cinnamon Cereal from “Two Moms in the Raw” it’s kind of like granola, with some sliced banana, from what I think is the largest banana I’ve ever seen, & unsweetened vanilla almond milk.

YUM.

Why You Should Eat 5x a Day.

[From the ‘Tone It Up’ Nutrition Plan VIA http://ToneItUpDiet.com]

“If you don’t eat often, your body releases the hormone cortisol. Cortisol has positive effects with your fight or flight response and dealing with pain, but it also has many negative effects. Cortisol impairs cognitive performance and suppresses your thyroid function and metabolism. It decreases your lean muscle tissue, decreases your bone density, raises your blood pressure, lowers your immunity and worst of all for our Tone It Up clients: it promotes belly fat!

YIKES!

Cortisol directly stores visceral fat in your abdomen covering those beautiful muscles you work so hard for. Stress can also trigger higher levels of cortisol… so we want you to be stress-free.”
